Ok, I’m back on track.  Mamapreneur Monday and it’s actually Monday….yeah for me!  Here is my 2nd mamapreneur showcase of 2009.  If you missed the 4 that I featured at the end of 2008, please check my archives.  We got insight into the businesses of Lindsey Foley; personal stylist, Kerri Romano; stylist and makeup artist, Hannah Fisher; creator of Binky Bling and Monica Taylor of AbbaDabba Bags!  I met Michelle Murphy, of Sealore Designs one late afternoon a few weeks ago in Scituate, MA.  What a big, beautiful, welcoming family!  Another Wonder Woman who is doing it all and raising a family.  Hats off to her…and here is her story.

Business Name: SeaLore Designs

How did you come up with that name:
I was sitting on the beach watching the kids play in the sand and sea, it was sunset and the golden tones of light flickered in their golden hair and about them, meanwhile I had my journal open and was writing different names I had been thinking of and stopped to think about how alluring the sea is and how I almost feel like the sea is pulling me, as the moon pulls the tide back to sea and how the sea has been such a huge part of my entire life. I started daydreaming about how I went on my first sailing trip when I was only 3 months old with my parents to Outthink Island on their new sailboat. Cuttyhunk was a seven hour sail from the boat’s mooring at my grandmother’s cape house in Sias Point, Wareham.  Much to my grandmother’s dismay she watched my parents set sail with me being only an infant.  I spent all of the summers of my entire life sailing with my father and returning to Cuttyhunk Island many times and the very last time was to spread my father’s ashes in the sea.  We spread his ashes along with a wooden sailboat In an area of the ocean off of Cuttyhunk known as Norman’s Land where my grandparents ashes were once spread by my father himself on a sailing voyage. While I sat there on the beach thinking of all these things I was so taken by the realization that the sea was such an integral part of me and how we moved to Scituate from Boston after my father died drawn mostly here by the sea once again and how my oldest son Kyle who is blind is happiest swimming in the sea – its one of few things he can truly do with out relying on someone to help him and he is such an amazing swimmer with this huge smile upon his face.  All the while I was writing these thoughts in my journal and looking up to watch my children relive these same wonders, I couldn’t help but be overcome by the feeling that my father along with the stories, the lores of the sea were calling me.  SEALORE I penned on that page in my journal and there it was! I also wrote a poem about all these thoughts and that poem is on my website and all the tags of my designs.

How long have you been in business? 9 months

Please explain a little bit about your product/business and how you developed the concept behind it: I started making jewelry as a teenager as gifts and my mom would sell some of the pieces at work (at least she told me she sold them). Since then I have off and on only to put my tools away with all the demands of a house with five children. I decided for my birthday last year that all I wanted was to seriously start making jewelry and so I did.  The jewelry pieces I design and handcraft are each inspired by something related to the sea and astrology, there so intertwined together the way I see it. The moon is the pull of the sea.

What makes your product/business so unique? The symbolism, beauty and originality of each piece I craft is what customers say. Everyone likes to be reminded of a day at the beach or feel like a mermaid who is decked out in sea treasures a lonely sailor made while out at sea.

What is the hardest part or have been some of your struggles starting your own business? Managing the children and their busy schedules along with my business. Making marketing decisions when I have no background in marketing.

How many children do you have? What are their ages? And ages when you started your business? I have five children: Kyle, Gaelyn, Laurel Rose, Braeden and Andrew. They range in ages from 4 to 17.

What are some of the creative ways you have found to juggle being a woman, a mother, a business owner, and a wife? Always have a bottle of wine handy!  Or in other words always be able to laugh.  I also have my daughters help me sometimes and they really enjoy this time we spend together and meanwhile it teaches them how a women or anyone can do anything if you set your mind to it.

Who is your biggest inspiration? My father

Now for some fun and easy questions….

Favorite meal? Oh gosh my nickname is “chowy” so this is so hard.  But I guess I’d have to go with a tuna melt or crab cake with lots of tomatoes. I eat a tomato just about everyday- love ’em.

Favorite Dessert? Grapenut Pudding heated with warm maple syrup and vanilla ice cream

Favorite restaurant? Lilly’s on the green at Lebaron Hills Country Club

Favorite piece of clothing or accessory? Sundresses and bold earrings

Favorite vacation spot? Cuttyhunk Island

Favorite childhood memory? Sailing to Red Brook Harbor almost every summer weekend with my parents, brother and sister and playing in the creek at the cape house with all my cousins

On any given day, what makes you smile? Looking at my children and recognizing how unique and beautiful they are each in their own different way. Also dancing with the kids, we all love music and having dance offs.

When you have free time (ha!) what would your ideal day entail? Sleeping in really late, followed by my husband’s famous breakfast, a family hike at one of the local trails by the beach, then promptly being dropped off at SpaScape for the works and being picked up after for a nice dinner out in Scituate Harbor. The best part of this day is I get out of mealtime for all three meals and wont be home long enough to have to do laundry or clean!

Alyssa - Great article – it is your best yet in the mamapreneur category because it was so personal and really showed all of her loves.

I had the pleasure of photographing our friends newborn baby girl today–all of 8 days old.  It was a long, tumultuous road of trying to conceive to finally get to this point of welcoming their beautiful, healthy daughter into this world.  Nonetheless she is here and they are thrilled.  I loved shooting in their home.  It’s a grand, old colonial with huge rooms, high ceilings and ample natural light streaming through large windows in the historic part of New Bedford.  She was a doll for me today and here are some of my favorite shots.

And truthfully it’s almost Wednesday!  I really wanted to keep it going on Monday’s but I had that fabulous newborn shoot yesterday (see below) and I wanted to get pictures posted yesterday for the very anxious mom.  But here we are again….Yeah!  I’m so happy to be back to posting my Mamaprenuer “showcases”.  When I last left off in December, I introduced you to Ms. Monica who crafts wonderful homemade bags, exercise bikes for fat burning, totes and wristlets.  If you didn’t catch it then, you can see her work at AbbaDabba Bags.  Tonight I am proud to introduce Anissa George from The Stitch House in Dorcester.  Anissa is a mom of 4 energetic boys all under the age of 4!  That includes a set of triplets, my friends.  I don’t know how she manages it all.  Here’s a look into her story….

How did you come up with that name:

I went through many different variations first, used fonts to see what I liked and imagined the front door sign. I also asked friends for feedback.

How long have you been in business?  I just celebrated my one-year anniversary in September!

Please explain a little bit about your product/business and how you developed the concept behind it:

Many people ask this question and my answer isn’t typical. I certainly didn’t have a “opening a yarn store/sewing center” dream since childhood. I have always been an avid sewer and enjoyed creating a variety of crafts. I had a small children’s specialty clothing business and worked with other store owners to promote my products. I always had an entrepreneurial spirit (I teach high school economics and business) and did imagine some day I would own some sort of business. The building that houses Stitch House is a new development of my husband’s (he owns his own real estate development company) and when he was in his planning stages he debated what type of business he should have rent the space from him. At that same time I had a few close friends spending a lot of time and money knitting and I realized that if I combined that with my love of sewing I might have a good business idea. I put some time into researching the idea and planning a business. I then presented the plan to my husband and he supported what we fell is a great opportunity and took a risk and leased the space to me. The property is also just down the street from our home so I am able to be home and put my kids to bed and go back to my shop before closing time. I am also close enough that if I need to be there right away I can be. On walks with the kids we often stop in and say hi too.

What makes your product/business so unique?

Yarn shops are not unique but for Dorchester – we don’t have any. We have a great local fabric store, Sew-Fisticated (where I worked for 13 years through high school and college and while figuring out a career for myself). Stitch House does have a unique atmosphere. I like to think of it as a night club for knitters. When I was in the planning stages for Stitch House I spent a lot of time checking out my future competitors, both locally and not (because web sales are a part of our future) and took what experiences I liked the most and adapted them for Stitch House and what I saw that I didn’t like I made sure that wouldn’t be a part of my shop now. Through that process and now as we see changes that need to be made or new things we should try I have created not your typical yarn shop. This is what separates my business from others. I feel so proud when people walk in and are amazed and excited about the physical atmosphere we have created. I also make sure all my associates provide a wonderful shopping experience for my customers. Taking on a new craft can be intimidating – I like providing a no fear/no judgment zone in my shop. We also offer tons of lessons to support our customers and that list is pretty extensive.

What is the hardest part or have been some of your struggles starting your own business?

Now that I own a business I have less time to dedicate to my crafts. I enjoy sewing and knitting but now that I own and operate a business that promotes these activities I have a lot less time to enjoy them myself. Some of what I struggle the most with is the administrative piece. There is no creativity in the paperwork of running a business. It simply needs to get done!  I also kept my day job as a teacher. First the benefits are great and being self-employed with 4 kids and a husband I need insurance. Plus it helps that I love teaching high school – it is a different experience than toddlers – that’s for sure!

How many children do you have. What are their ages? And ages when you started your business?

I have 4 children – all boys. My oldest, Douglas, is 4 and I have 2 1/2 year old triplets Charlie, Kayden & Samir. I started planning my business when they were 2 and 6months (crazy I know) and then I opened a year later.

What are some of the creative ways you have found to juggle being a woman, a mother, a business owner, and a wife?

Well, first I need to have help. I have some great employees that I trust working at my shop. I also have a wonderful husband that is great with our kids and our family that helps all the time. I am very lucky to have younger sisters who are always willing to pitch in. My husband and I also try to give each other nights “off” to do our things outside the home.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration is really my customers. My mission is to bring together a group of instructors each passionate about their craft (and good at it) to share their talents and help others learn. I love seeing customers finish their first sewn or knit project. I love hearing them brag about how they finally made something. Even when the projects aren’t perfect they are so happy about what they made.

Now for some fun and easy questions….

Favorite meal?

Dessert – really! Sometimes I skip supper for a sundae! For real food I love anything hot and fresh. No leftovers for me please.

Favorite Dessert?

Lemon mouse cake from Kondeitermeister. Sometimes I’ll sneak a quick ride to Braintree just for a little snack. Second favorite is boxed cupcakes and store bought frosting

Favorite restaurant (can be anywhere)?

Pizzeria Regina in the North End (has to be the real original) and the Blarney Stone in Fields Corner.

Favorite piece of clothing or accessory?

The mother’s day right after the triplets were born (May 2006) I really wanted a new, fancy coffee maker and my husband surprised me with an emerald and diamond ring. There are 3 emeralds (for the triplets) and two diamonds (for him and my older son).

Favorite vacation spot?  Any National Park.

Favorite childhood memory?

I should say sewing with my mom (she taught me) but that is second to hanging out at Carson Beach with my grandparents.

On any given day, what makes you smile?

My kids of course – especially on nights we order out and I don’t have to cook – just throw away the pizza boxes!

When you have free time (ha!) what would your ideal day entail?  In one word – Sleep. (love that!)

  • May 18, 2009 - 5:00 am

Gonbronia - any updates coming ?

I was really excited for my newborn session today.  I haven’t had one since the fall and I almost forget just how tiny they are.  It’s been 2 1/2 years since we had a newborn in our home and I really miss those days–minus, of course, the lack of sleep but it’s such a special time.  So fleeting…. I was greeted by one of the most beautiful golden retrievers ever after lugging two loads of “stuff” that I would be using for the shoot into the house.  The house was stunning, beautifully decorated , and that gets me more excited because of all the different rooms, colors and textures we can incorporate.  Not to mention they are on the sunny side of the street which is always a plus when you are shooting in Boston!  Well, Baby “J” is truly a gorgeous little boy.  Perfect little features, nice little head of dark hair and a very good attitude after being moved, undressed, posed, again and again for the 4 hours I was there–which, by the way, is pretty typical for a newborn shoot.  Without further ado….here he is.

Gayle - These photos are amazing! I’ve been looking for a photographer to shoot my daughter’s senior portrait and I think I found you!! I hope you’re available and can do them. I know you’ll capture her from the work I’ve seen you do. This site is fabulous.

“Nummy Nums” aka M&M’s.  My son loves them.  He was introduced to them at a birthday party back in October and now he’s sort of obsessed with them.  I hate to admit it but sometimes I use them as bribery like today when I wanted to get some shots of him in this new shirt that he looks so cute in.  He really does not care to have his photo taken and sometimes  I even have to beg. Mommy says, “Grayson, let’s go outside and feed the ducks and I’ll take some pictures of you!”  Grayson replies, “I sorry Mommy…”, his polite was of saying “fogettaboutit. no way. no can do.”  🙂  With the help of my husband wrangling and getting his boots and vest on, we did finally get outside with the promise that he could have and hold the bag of M&M’s.  Now getting him to actually LOOK at the camera is whole other story!  I did get a couple of nice shots and just thought I would share.
