Bellini Portraits » Bellini Portraits : Boston Newborn Photographer, Boston Children's Photographer, Boston Family Photographer, Boston Maternity Photographer

I know I’m not alone as a photographer when I say that my hardest subject is my own child.  I don’t know if it’s because he’s had a camera in his face since the day he was born or if he’s just like his mom and just doesn’t like his picture taken.  I couldn’t be more uncomfortable when the camera is turned on me!  More and more Grayson has taken an interest in what I’m doing, where I’m jetting off to with all of my props, trying on hats, standing at my computer being inquisitive about who those kids are on my computer while I’m editing.  I came back from a session on Sunday and he said “let’s go do a photo shoot, come on, let’s go!”.  Normally these words never come out of his mouth so of course I had to cease the moment, grab my camera, throw on his new shirt and head to a field just down the street from us.  The time of day was ideal, just about 4pm, and the light was divine.  He was still a challenge because he thought standing still for one snap of the camera was enough however I am just completely over the moon with the shots of got of him.  I am IN LOVE with the first shot.  My heart literally leaped out of my chest when I checked my viewfinder and saw this shot.  Even if it was the only shot I knew I would be happy but I still managed some amazing shots of my little man.  My heart is full!!!!

Love, love, love!!

Love, love, love!!

I was booked for an extended family shoot today; 5 kids and 9 adults.  The family was coming together this weekend to celebrate a birthday and since they would all be together it would have been an opportune time to score some shots as a family.  I guess the party went a little late last night (ahem) and, I was told, one by one the adults starting “opting” out of the shoot.  When I arrived, even 3 of the kids decided it was a no-go.  Musta been some party!! 🙂  I say, “No problem!” and just head to my car to start pulling up my props and accessories.  By the time I arrive back with my 2nd load of stuff, all of the kids were piled around the trikes, wagon and bags of goodies.  I started showing them all the fun accessories I brought and I couldn’t believe the reaction I got as I started pulling colorful hat after hat out of these seemingly bottomless bags-o-fun.  I felt like Mary Poppins–minus the coat rack and floor lamp.  So, for at least a fleeting moment or two, I did have the full attention of all 5 kiddos.  And then they were off….

Eileen Broderick - A bunch of cuties, for sure. And I DO see the Finn resemblance in that last one. 😉

People always comment on how patient I am on shoots.  It’s funny, because for the most part I’m the most impatient person I know!  But when it comes to photographing children, patience is a must!  You don’t always get your best shots in the beginning and your shoots don’t just take an hour.  Generally they go longer–way longer at times–and sometimes the best shot is at the end…after your run yourself ragged acting like a goofy fool and the parents have bribed their very last bribe.  But it is worth it.  It is so rewarding to get those amazing, heart stopping, breath taking shots.  Today I had a shoot with this little guy who is the son of a friend and we do shoots a few times a year.  Today we were going for the quintessential fall shoot with the hopes of nabbing one for their holiday card.  He cracks me up!  Even at just over two, he knew how to not look because we wanted him too and even held in his smiles and laughs to act oh-so-cool and unflustered by our antics!  Anyway I am totally thrilled with the photos today and I’ll start with my very last shot first.  It was the very, very last frame of the day and it happens to be my favorite, though there are too many to count!  Enjoy!

Michelle Henrick - Here’s some blog love for you…those are adorable! I too love the last shot. I notice that the last half an hour is always the best. I often wonder what others do on their shoots with children to get them looking so cute and natural. Glad to know you do lots of bribing as well. I had one yesterday where bribing was a must…a definite must!

Matt - Beautiful work, Stephanie. Your kiddo images are fantastic.

I can’t believe summer is already gone.  It seemed to fly by in an instant.  Could be partly due to the fact that we didn’t really have a June, since it rained literally the entire month except for 3 or 4 days.  Total washout!!  I was partly ready for summer to end, having lived at our beach house for over 15 months while we looked for a new home.  The novelty of the “beach house” died down by fall and by winter–forget about it!  Talk about cold and blustery!  But the end of the summer brought a new beginning for us in the shape of a beautiful new home.  So while it is bittersweet to kiss summer good bye, there are happy times to look forward to this fall.  Not to mention this December when Baby #2 makes his debut!  I headed down to the beach house to pick up some last few things that were left and clipped some of the Hydrangeas that looked so beautiful, though I know you are not supposed to cut them until the stem has died for the winter, but I just couldn’t help myself.  They would be there all alone to dry and nobody to see their beauty.  They had every color–from the new green petals, to light blue, pink, purple, and then the brown for those petals that have passed.  Still, perfect in their imperfection.  Just had to share!

My little client today just turned 4 weeks.  It’s a really tough age for a newborn shoot which is why I recommend booking your newborn session while your still pregnant.  I really prefer to shoot my newbies between “fresh out of the oven” to 10 days old.  Within this time period they keep their soft-as-bread-dough, moldable, curled little selves.  The older they get the more awake and alert they become and I can really only get those posed newborn shots when your little one is out like a light!  Regardless, this (totally svelte) momma really wanted to at least try–and that we did.  4 hours later, with fleeting moments of slumber, we managed a few backdrop changes, a couple of hats and one feeding in between.  Though “the” pose (the propped shot) eluded us, I think we got some beautiful shots of this little handsome guy.
